Astronomy Day is May 2nd

Saturday May 2 is Astronomy Day.   There will be an open house at the Veen Observatory (map at the link) on Kissing Rock Road near Lowell (give us a comment if you know of other astronomical activities going on this weekend in Michigan).   There’s a nominal cost of $3 for adults and $2 for under 17.  You can see the moon (about 60% full Sat. Night) and Saturn (and Saturn’s biggest moon, Titan).  Take the Alden Nash exit north off I-96 to get there.  You can also visit the Chaffee Planetarium for a variety of sky shows and while you’re at the Museum, see the cool dinosaurs that have there now!  The Kalamazoo Astronomical Assn. will hold their big Astronomy Day on May 30.  Here’s a link to Astronomy Day events all over the U.S.  Check spaceweather.com for a “seething flurry of plasma!” and a look at a yet virtually sunspot free sun.  The sun has been pretty much sunspot free now for 615 days - the average solar minimum is 485 days.  An Amber Alert may have to be issued for Sunspot Cycle 24.  Finally, here’s the link to check when the International Space Station will be visible in Grand Rapids, other towns in Michigan or pick any state in the U.S.
